Music

Programs offered to interested students include the following: Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Show Choir and School Musical. Choose from the descriptions below.

Band

Beginning Band
  • Open to Grade 5
  • Throughout the School Year: Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 a.m. - 7:40 a.m.
  • Beginning Band includes a small group pull out lesson once a week and two full band rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. The students learn proper playing technique for their instrument and how to read music during the small group lesson. Then, they apply those skills during the full band rehearsals as they prepare for our concerts.
  • The director meets with all interested students in the fall and provides them with an opportunity to play several of the band instruments to help make a decision about which instrument to play. 
  • Parents are then invited to a recruitment meeting, where they can register their child for the band and rent an instrument. For 2016-2017, the open house event is set for September 14, 2016, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
  • Beginning band will start the before-school rehearsals on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

Cadet Band
  • Open to Grade 6
  • Throughout the School Year: Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:00 a.m. - 7:40 a.m.
  • Cadet Band (sixth grade) consists of a small group pull-out lesson and two full band rehearsals on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:00 a.m. - 7:40 a.m.  In the small group lessons, we focus on proper instrumental playing technique and music reading skills. The full band rehearsals help the students learn how to play in a musical ensemble as we prepare for concerts.
  • Cadet band morning rehearsals will start on Monday, September 12, 2016.

Jazz Band
  • Open to Grades 6, 7 & 8
  • Open to students in the band program who can demonstrate a comfortable level of proficiency, through an audition, to fill the necessary instrumentation.
  • We will play several evening concerts and occasional school gigs.
  • Jazz Band meets Mondays after school from 2:55 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Jazz band auditions take place in late September.  Interested students should pay attention to morning announcements for information or stop by and see Mr. Owens.

7th Grade Band
  • Open to Grade 7
  • Throughout the year: Students will meet during Creative Arts periods.
8th Grade Band
  • Open to Grade 8
  • Throughout the year: Students will meet during Creative Arts periods.

Chorus

5th & 6th Grade Chorus
  • Open to Grades 5 & 6
  • Throughout the school year: Tuesdays after school from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. 
    • The first after school rehearsal is on Tuesday, September 13, 2016.
    • P.A.S.S. bus service is available for transportation home. 
    • Students are invited to bring a snack for the after school rehearsal.
  • Chorus is a great singing opportunity where you will make new friends, have a lot of fun, and sing a variety of music from popular, modern, musical theater, all the way to American folk songs and classical art songs.
  • Chorus will have two major performances during the school year, and is a great way to get involved and prepare for our Spring Musical!
  • Complete the Google form to indicate your interest.
  • For students who are new to chorus, parents/guardians need to order a D103 Music Polo for performances. Please visit the Revtrak Webstore to place the order. Click on Daniel Wright, then Daniel Wright Music.

7th & 8th Grade Chorus
  • Open to Grades 7 & 8
  • Throughout the school year: Wednesdays after school from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    • The first after school rehearsal is on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.
    • P.A.S.S. bus service is available for transportation home. 
    • Students are invited to bring a snack for the after school rehearsal.
    • Students can participate in both chorus and a sport/extracurricular activity.  Students can be excused once a week from practice to attend chorus rehearsal.
    • Students are excused from chorus in order to compete at games, meets, major competitions, and any travel that is associated.
    • Coaches and Mr. Clarin will work with students to be flexible with practice schedules in event of major performance or playoffs/tournament situations.

Orchestra

5th Grade Orchestra
  • Open to Grade 5
  • Throughout the year: Students will have one orchestra rehearsal after school and one small group lesson during the school day.
    • After-school rehearsals occur on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. 
    • Students have the opportunity to take the P.A.S.S. bus home after rehearsal.
    • After-school rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. 
  • It is a great opportunity for students to continue to play if they played at Half Day School! We also welcome new students, who are interested in playing a string instrument!
  • There are two large concerts for our students during the school year.
  • Students should order String Basics Book 2 through the Revtrak Webstore.  
6th Grade Orchestra
  • Open to Grade 6
  • Throughout the year: Students will have one orchestra rehearsal after school and one small group lesson during the school day.
    • After-school rehearsals occur on Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. 
    • Students have the opportunity to take the P.A.S.S. bus home after rehearsal.
    • After-school rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 15, 2016.

Show Choir

  • Open to Grades 6, 7 & 8, by audition. (Think "Glee" but without the drama.) 
  • Throughout the School Year: Wednesday from 6:00-7:30 p.m. 
  • Show Choir focuses on musical theater, jazz/swing tunes, and pop, highlighting harmonized vocals with tight choreography. 
  • Auditions: Be prepared to sing 30-45 seconds of a song of your choosing, and be ready to learn the vocals and choreography from a short section of a song. For 2016-2017, Show Choir Auditions will be on Wednesday, September 7, from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

School Musical

Students have the opportunity to act, sing and dance in a variety of roles in the annual school musical. Students can also participate behind the scenes in the stage crew. For information, please visit the School Musical webpage.
