Making Sense of Equivalent Fractions

Pre-algebra students took a hands-on approach to reviewing equivalent fractions and how they help us add fractions as seen in these photos of students. Each student received seven strips of paper that were the same length, with each strip representing one whole. Students folded the strips into different fractions, including halves, thirds, fourths, and eighths. By placing the folded strips next to one another, students could see how different fractions can represent the same amount.

"This visual activity helps students make connections between equivalent fractions and the strategies they use when adding fractions," explained Math Teacher Christian Miller.
