STEAM Challenge: Landing on the Moon!

STEAM Challenge: Landing on the Moon!

Sixth- and seventh-grade science teachers bring hands-on excitement to the classroom during a Winterfest STEAM Competition. This year’s challenge took inspiration from NASA’s Artemis Lunar Lander, pushing students to think like real engineers as seen in these photos.

Tasked with designing a shock-absorbing landing system, students worked in teams to protect their fragile "astronaut"—an egg—from a simulated moon landing. Using a paper plate, rubber bands, balloons, and other materials, they carefully constructed and tested their designs, adjusting for balance, impact resistance, and flight control.

The competition encourages critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork, all while making science and engineering fun. Some landers stuck the landing, while others—well, let’s just say their astronauts won’t be making a return trip!

The Winterfest STEAM Challenge continues to be a highlight for students, igniting curiosity and problem-solving skills in future scientists and engineers. ðŸš€
